Taking Over
Mensah went off against Stanford, going for 401 yards and five touchdowns in Miami’s 45-6 win. He began the game going 8/8 before his first completion, and he never had consecutive incompletions either. His performance was the highest yardage and touchdown total for any Hurricanes QB in their debut.
Most notably, he outperformed both Carson Beck and Cam Ward. Ward obviously went on to win the Heisman two seasons ago after debuting with 385 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.
Mensah padded his stats with a 14/15, 252 yards, three touchdown line agaisnt FAMU on Thursday night and can do so against with a matchup against Central Michigan in the coming weeks. He also gets four teams that finished in the bottom-10 against the pass in the ACC last season to finish the schedule.
Domino Effect
The direct successor to Mensah’s big day was receiver Malachi Toney, who also finished with a career-high 12 receptions, 234 yards, and three touchdowns. Toney’s performance was not only a career high but a program high as well in both receptions and yards. Florida sportsbooks gave Toney a bump as well to +1200.
