BLACKSBURG, Va. – A new era for the Virginia Tech Hokies kicks off this season with James Franklin taking over as head coach for the 2026-27 season. Franklin comes in with a 128-60 all-time head coaching record, most notably at Penn State.
With a new head coach comes hesitant odds on college football prop betting sites. However, Franklin’s arrival had a positive impact on the Hokies futures odds with +15000 odds to win the National Championship, and +2200 odds to win the ACC. Both significant jumps from 2025.
The Hokies’ win total remained at 6.5 from last season, but the odds to go over strengthened from +120 to -170.
New Look Hokies
As expected, James Franklin packed his bags at Penn State and brought over 12 transfers from the Nittany Lions, including sophomore QB Ethan Grunkemeyer, who started most of last season with Drew Allar injured. Overall, this is the second-ranked transfer portal class in the ACC and seventh in the nation.
Along with Grunkemeyer, Franklin also recruited receivers Tyseer Denmark and Jeff Exinor from Penn State, both former 4-Star prospects out of high school, and 4-Star tight end transfer, Luke Reynolds.
If there is one thing that’s for sure, Franklin will get the most out of his team during the regular season. He’s finished every regular season of his coaching career except one (2020 shortened season) at or above a .500 record.
Looking at their schedule this season, every game is winnable except playing at Miami. They could easily start the season 4-0 with wins over VMI, Old Dominion, at Maryland, and at Boston College. Expect their odds on Virginia sportsbooks to shorten after the first few weeks of the season.
