LUBBOCK, Texas – A final decision has been made by a Lubbock County judge in favor of granting Brendan Sorsby one final year of eligibility to play for Texas Tech this season, despite the NCAA ruling him permanently ineligible.
Sorsby was caught betting on several college football games while a backup quarterback for the Indiana Hoosiers. His bets included both game lines and game props.
In total, it’s been reported that he placed at least 2,900 total bets during two years at Indiana and another 165 during his time at Cincinnati, for approximately $38,000 wagered.
The Ruling
ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the ruling while also adding that the school will enforce a two-game suspension on Sorsby in its first two games of the season against Abilene Christian and Oregon State.
The ruling is a temporary injunction granted by Judge Ken Curry. Thamel also included a statement from Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt.
“As we have said before, we do not believe that the circumstances of Brendan’s case warranted permanent ineligibility. As he returns to our football program, we remain committed to supporting Brendan's recovery and ensuring his compliance with the court’s order. A comprehensive support structure, including clinical care, monitoring, and compliance checks, will remain fully in place for the duration of Brendan’s time as a student at Texas Tech.”
