Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby Caught Betting On CFB, Checks Into Rehab

  • Texas Tech transfer QB Brendan Sorsby has checked into a gambling rehabilitation center.
  • Sorsby bet on the Indiana Hoosiers while he was a member of the team.

LUBBOCK, Texas – On Monday afternoon, out of Lubbock, it was reported by Pete Thamel that Texas Tech transfer QB Brendan Sorsby has checked into a “residential treatment program” to treat a gambling addiction.

In 2022, as a part of the Indiana Hoosiers as a true freshman redshirting, Sorsby bet on several college football props in games that he did not participate in. Bets were mainly placed on the Hoosiers to win.

His streak of bets on Indiana college football betting sites did not draw any major attention from law enforcement as they came in waves of small amounts. There is also a growing belief that Sorsby has not been linked to anyone trying to influence him to bet either or impact a game either.

Statements were made by both Texas Tech athletics and the NCAA on the matter. Sorsby is currently under investigation by the NCAA with a reported thousands of bets placed.

“Texas Tech Athletics and Brendan Sorsby announced today that Sorsby will take an immediate, indefinite leave of absence from the football program to enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.”

"Due to confidentiality rules put in place by NCAA member schools, the NCAA will not comment on current, pending, or potential investigations. However, the NCAA takes sports betting very seriously and is committed to the protection of student-athletes' well-being and the integrity of competition. The Association works with integrity monitoring services, state regulators, and other stakeholders to conduct appropriate due diligence whenever reports are received."

Other College Betting Scandals

This is the first time since 2023 that a college football player has been caught betting on college football. Both Iowa and Iowa State players were caught then, with several being suspended and some even criminally charged.

As far as college players betting, in the 2024-25 college basketball season, players from Tulan, DePaul, Nicholls State, and Kennesaw State were a part of 17 DI teams involved in a 29+ game scandal where players received between $10k and $30k to fix games.
