Tentatively, yes, JMU can absolutely repeat as conference champions and compete for the Group of 6 playoff bid as well. Despite all of the transfers out, including Alonza Barnett and Wayne Knight, and head coach Bob Chesney leaving, they hit a home run hire in former Florida Gators and Louisiana Lafayette head coach, Billy Napier.
Napier alone has tons of Sun Belt experience during his four years with the Ragin' Cajuns. He led them to three straight conference title games and a conference championship. That kind of experience at this conference cannot go unnoticed.
Old Dominion In Trouble
Do not buy into the hype on Old Dominion just yet on CFB sportsbooks. They have a big-time QB battle on their hands between Washington State transfer Jaxon Potter and redshirt sophomore Quinn Henicle. They lost plenty in the portal, including starting QB Colton Joseph, along with 28 other players that transferred out, while only bringing in seven.
Trojans & Ragin Cajuns Out Of The West
Troy and Louisiana Lafayette should be at each other’s through in the west for most of the year. Gerard Parker is heading into his third season after turning this Troy team from a 4-8 record in 2024 to an 8-4 regular season that ended in a conference championship appearance.
As for the Ragin Cajuns, it’ll be all Lunch Winfield, who is one of the top QBs with high expectations in the conference going into this season. Michael Desormeaux is going into his fifth season and is in need of a wake-up, with three of his last four seasons ending at 6-6 and losing the bowl game.
